Traveling with a dog

Dogs are welcome on PID vehicles, but it is always necessary to keep in mind the conditions and restrictions for their transport, so that it is safe and trouble-free both for other passengers and for the dogs themselves.

Dogs can be taken with you in all types of transport under certain conditions, in two basic ways:

  1. Enclosed in a container with an impermeable bottom
  2. On a leash and with a secure muzzle on

A dog without a crate can only be transported if it has a safe muzzle on and is kept on a leash for a short time. You must have a leash and a muzzle even if you are transporting the dog in a bag that is not completely closed.

You can also transport other small animals in a completely closed box with a solid impermeable bottom, as long as they are not a nuisance to other passengers, for example due to their smell or noise.

What to do before getting into the vehicle?

Since many people meet in vehicles and space is usually limited, the number of dogs that can travel in one vehicle at the same time is limited, mainly for safety reasons. The driver can also completely refuse boarding with the dog for various reasons. That is why it is necessary to let the driver know before getting into the vehicle that you want to board with your dog. Preferably by raising your arm. And have the dog ready for transport.

Where to go with the dog in the vehicle?

Board trams, trolleybuses or buses through the door marked with the appropriate pictogram and place the dog on the adjacent platform. If there is a stroller or wheelchair on this platform, find another free place that will be safe for the dog and where the dog will not disturb others as much as possible. If you are traveling with a stroller and a dog at the same time, you can of course have them placed on the platform together. If you are already in the car and a blind person gets on with another dog, follow the instructions of the driver, who can assign you another place in the car.

A maximum of one dog can be transported in the subway on the platform at each door (unless one person is traveling with two dogs at the same time). However, such a platform must not be full or have a pram or wheelchair on it (unless the dog is traveling with them). The dog must have a secure muzzle on and be kept on a leash for a short time in all areas of the subway, including platforms, vestibules, escalators or elevators.

Only one of the passengers can take the dog into the elevator, unless the elevator is already full.

Be extra careful when driving on an escalator – especially dogs that are not used to escalators can get confused and get an unnecessary shock or even an injury. That’s why it’s better to practice boarding the escalator with your dog – a beginner somewhere in peace, or take him in your arms.

There is no special place for dogs on trains or ferries, but always proceed in such a way that the dog interferes as little as possible and it is safe for both the dog and other passengers.

Dogs are not allowed on the seats under any circumstances (although you may feel that they are sometimes cleaner than some fellow passengers)!

How many dogs can be transported at one time?

Only one dog can be transported in one vehicle at a time in trams, trolleybuses, buses or ferries. The exception is “working” dogs, usually guide dogs or assistance dogs. They can board even if another dog is already in the car. If one passenger is traveling with two dogs, both dogs can be transported at the same time. It is possible to transport more dogs in the metro and in trains, unless special circumstances prevent this. On the Petrin cable car, there can be a maximum of one dog in one compartment of the cable car.

Exceptions for special dogs

The transport of a guide dog of a blind person or an assistance dog of a disabled person or a service dog of the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic, the Ministry of Defense of the Czech Republic, the Fire and Rescue Service of the Czech Republic, the Prison Service of the Czech Republic and the municipal (municipal) police cannot be refused or excluded from transport. These dogs are not subject to those restrictions that would prevent them from providing effective assistance to an accompanied person or in any other application of special training.

These dogs can possibly be transported in a place other than the platform at the door marked with the appropriate pictogram. However, these exceptions only apply if these dogs actually perform assistance work. This does not apply, for example, to dogs in training.

What about other living animals?

Of the other live animals, the passenger may only take small pets and other small animals into the vehicle, if they are completely enclosed in easily portable cages, baskets or other containers with an impermeable bottom. In terms of transport charges, the same conditions apply to a container with an animal as to other luggage, i.e. if its dimensions do not exceed 25×45×70 cm, it is transported free of charge, otherwise for 20 CZK.

The accompanying person is responsible for transporting animals!

A passenger transporting a dog without a crate may not endanger the safety of other fellow passengers or the carrier’s staff and is fully responsible for any damage caused by transporting the dog. He is also obliged to immediately remove any pollution caused by the dog or to pay for the cleaning of the polluted place.

You can also get fined for a dog!

Please keep in mind that for violating the above-mentioned obligations and rules, as an accompanying dog, you risk a financial penalty of up to CZK 1,000, or even exclusion from transportation. So please follow all the instructions to avoid unnecessary inconvenience.
