Does your Lítačka card say “valid until 2020”? You need to replace it in 2026

From March 1, 2026, the first plastic Lítačka cards issued in 2016 will gradually expire. If a passenger has an original expiration date of 2020 on their card, they must exchange it for a new one during 2026. The change affects more than 370 thousand Lítačka cards throughout the year, but in reality, approximately 130,000 people who have a valid coupon loaded on their card.

The decisive date is the date stated directly on the card. If the plastic card states 2020 as the original expiration date, it is a card from 2016 that must be replaced. The date (day and month) is stated directly on the print. It is not about the validity of the coupon, but about the lifespan of the plastic card itself,” explains Vladimír Antonin Bláha, spokesperson for the Prague municipal company Operátor ICT, which manages the Lítačka card.

How to check validity

On the page Lítačka Card Exchange | Lítačka, passengers can simply check when their card expires, whether they are eligible for exchange, and find a detailed exchange procedure, an overview of fees, and a list of contact points by entering their card number.

You can also check validity:

After expiration, the card is invalid

After its life span expires, the Lítačka card becomes an invalid travel document, even if the passenger has an active coupon loaded on it. The passenger will then no longer be able to present the Lítačka card at transport controls in Prague’s public transport or on ČD trains (inspectors will not read information from an inactive chip), and will not be able to purchase any fares with it. It is the same as with a payment card; after its validity period has expired, it can no longer be used to pay anywhere.

In the event of a transport check on the metro, trams and buses in the capital of Prague, a record of the transport check will be drawn up on site with passengers whose Lítačka has expired. This means the same procedure as if the passenger forgets the Lítačka at home. The passenger will then resolve the record of the transport check either at the DPP e-shop (eshop.dpp.cz), if they have already created an account there in the past, or within 15 days in person at the DPP Central Dispatch Center, at Na Bojišti 5 in Prague 2. After verifying the validity of the coupon, the passenger will pay a fee of 50 crowns in both cases,” says Jakub Pekárek, Head of the DPP Transport Check Department.

In the case of a transport check on suburban bus lines outside the capital of Prague, we recommend that the situation be resolved at IDSK info centres.

Please note that when checking on trains, it is not possible to perform a retroactive verification of the coupon validity and only pay an administrative fee. In this case, passengers with an invalid Lítačka will always pay the full surcharge according to the railway carrier’s tariff.

We ask passengers to check the date stated directly on their card and not leave the exchange to the last minute. If the year 2020 is stated on it as the original end of validity, it is necessary to exchange it in 2026. The coupon itself remains intact and can be transferred to a new card without complications. The easiest way is to submit an application online, where delivery is free,” adds Vladimír Antonin Bláha.

How to make a replacement

The replacement can be made at any time during 2026 before the date, i.e. the day and month, indicated on the card print. The easiest way is to submit an application online via the PID Lítačka e-shop PID Lítačka Eshop | Lítačka

After logging into your account, simply select order a new card, select replacement of the existing card and enter its number. The new card can be sent by mail for free or prepared for personal collection for a fee of 50 CZK. The status of the application can be monitored online.

The card can also be issued in person at Škoda Palace or at selected DPP contact and sales points, their list and opening hours are available here: List of points of sales | Prague Public Transit Company, joint-stock company. After turning on the “Lítačka expresné” filter, the user will be shown the places where the card can currently be obtained while waiting. The fee for personal issuance is 50 CZK, express exchange costs 100 CZK. Exchange of cards produced in 2016 with original validity until 2020 is available for a reduced fee throughout 2026.

A valid time coupon is not lost when exchanged. The coupon can be transferred to a new card in the online account or application, and both cards (the original invalid or expiring card and the newly issued card) must be assigned to the same account in the “My coupons” section. This way, passengers do not lose any prepaid fare. OICT staff at Škoda Palace or at Infocenters and DPP sales points will also help with its transfer to the new Lítačka card.

The ICT operator recommends not leaving the exchange to the last minute. There may be increased interest in exchanges during 2026, so it is advisable to check the date as soon as possible and submit a request in time.

The expiration of the Lítačka card can be resolved in a different way than by exchanging it for a new one. Prepaid fares can also be linked to an identifier other than the plastic Lítačka card, for example with the PID Lítačka mobile application, a contactless Mastercard or Visa payment card, or an InKarta of Czech Railways. However, switching to another identifier, including transferring valid coupons, must be done before the Lítačka card expires.
